Ignorance at an "institute for higher learning"

You know where this is going. Yesterday, while I sat with the Chabad Rabbi on campus, we were approached by a Berkeley student who had some questions for us. Mind you, the Rabbi's son was sitting right in the Rabbi's lap listening to the whole conversation. It was hard to understand what this guy's point was but here is what I think he was trying to ask us: He was attempting to "understand" how we can reconcile our beliefs in God and Judaism when Zionist are instigating violence with neighboring people. I really had no idea what he was talking about and the Rabbi asked him repeatedly to point to which people these Zionists were picking on. The guy had no argument but managed to prove to us he is anti-Semitic and doesn't even realize it.

Now don't give me this, "but Yael, just because he doesn't understand what is going on and thinks it's Israel's fault, does not make him anti-Semitic." In my eyes, this is scarier than just flat out saying "I hate Jews". Why? Because, it is idiots like this guy who are going around saying things that are false but because they don't admit they hate Jews, there may be a few sad souls out there who will buy their crap. With the people who admit it, I know at least where they stand.

How can anyone in their right mind believe that Israel instigates things with neighboring countries? The Rabbi even told the guy that Israel was willing to give up land for peace. The Rabbi's words were lost on this guy. It is too late for this one. But what makes me sad is that his son had to see what kind of shit is festering around him.

Profound quote of the day. Read carefully

I took this from my friend's profile.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the Sailor, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the Marine, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the Airman who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.
Roll of Film

When I get my roll of film developed (yes, I know I really need a digital camera) I will have some interesting pictures to show you. Pictures from the anti-Semitic... I'm sorry, I meant anti-Israel...no wait what's the politically correct term? Anti-Zionist? Pro-Palestinian? Well, in any case, I'll have pictures from that "event" or I guess it was a protest.

And also, (drum roll please) there will be pictures from the Biology convention I went to where I met James Watson (among other amazing people). Berkeley may be deranged on the political front, but the science that is done here is still top-notch.

Imploring the future mayor of San Francisco

Please, please, PLEASE for the love of God rid the streets of all the homeless and bums! I had heard that things were getting bad in SF but I didn't realize how bad. From the mall on Powell St. (where the Nordtrom's is) to Union Square there were hundreds of them! It was a strange scene because here were these huge, beautiful, glamorous hotels and tons of bums everywhere around them. If tourism is suffering in SF don't you dare blame it on the economy Mayor Willie Brown! The city is disgusting.

But it was still sunny and I enjoyed shopping (mostly window shopping). Everything is decked out for Christmas, which even though I am a full-fledged Jew, is kind of a nice feeling. Some stores go a little overboard, and even if I were Christian there is no way I would enjoy Christmas carols so the departments stores can turn it off please!
San Francisco

Today was a beautiful day tainted by the fact that I had to spend most of it studying or at least pretending to do so. Tomorrow, after my exam (which I am not so sure will go great) I want to run away. Or maybe better put, get away. Take my CD filled with Mizrahi music and go over to SF. I am hoping it will be sunny as the weather report is claiming right now. I will go over there and chill the entire afternoon. Do some shopping, drink some coffee and just think.

I just hope I don't end up spending too much money at the department stores....I have a tendency to do so when such a situation presents itself. Can we say shopping spree? Yael cannot afford such an ordeal!
